MARRIAGE: Fay Norman Miller and Dora Mabel Powell were married on 18 Aug 1930
at the Julesburg Methodist Church, Julesburg, CO.
OCCUPATION: Bricklayer. He worked on many construction jobs in the area of
Ovid and Julesburg, CO
RECOLLECTIONS:
In November 1931, the family was called to Lodgepole, Nebraska due to the death
of Dora Miller's aunt, Rebecca Ann (Powell) Kilgore. Fay wanted to go hunting
after the services. He and Dora drove 10 miles out into the prairie. After
loading the gun, he leaned it against the running board of the car, while he
put on a jacket. The gun fell to the ground and went off hitting Fay in the
foot. Dora had never driven a car. Somehow, she steered and handled the
clutch and brakes while Fay shifted the gears. Dora never drove a car again.
The injury was so severe that Fay's leg was amputated just below the knee.

OCCUPATION: During WWII he worked for the Gates Rubber Company. After the war
he returned to bricklaying and construction.

mother's Bible record lists, 13 Mar 1909, Glenwood, Mills Co., IA.
RESIDENCES: Idaho Springs, CO while he worked on I-70; next moved to Kimball,
NE, then in 1963 to Greely, CO where he lived for 30 years.
EDUCATION: Soon after WWII, he attended the Denver Barber College. He worked at
this profession for a few years before he returned to construction work.
OCCUPATION: He worked in construction most of his life. Sometimes he and his
brother, Gail, worked for the same construction company. He usually operated a
bulldozer, but was capable of handling other road machinery. He built highways
in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska.
MILITARY: Served during WWII. He enlisted in the USN in October 1943. He took
training at Camp Hill, CO and Farragut, Idaho. He was aboard USS LST 578 in the
Pacific. He was discharged in Oct 1945.
HONORS: When he retired he received an award for 54 years of service from the
Colorado Operating Engineers.
HOBBIES: Orson Powell loved horses. He raised several and trained some for
racing in which he had some successes.
CREMATION: Cremated and buried in Ovid Cemetery, Ovid, CO

RECOLLECTIONS:
Fredrick Peter Powell was a construction worker. He enlisted in the Navy in
Sept. 1944. His first ship took part in action in Sicily and Italy. Twice
ships he served on received damage in action. Later, he was aboard the ship
that participated in the return of General MacArthur to the Phillipines.
Fred's brother, Gail, asked in every one of his letters home for word of Fred
and Orson. He wrote of how he always looked for their ships. Finally, in July
1944, Gail's and Fred's ships docked at the same port in The Marshall
Islands.
Gail wrote, "What a happy reunion!" Then in Nov. 1944, Orson and Fred's ships
docked together at a port in the Phillipines. Orson wrote home, "What a
reunion!"
In Gail's letter, dated 12 Jul 1945, he wrote about hearing the announcement
over this ship's radio that Fred's ship had been hit by suicide planes at
Okinawa, with 224 casualties. Fred Powell was listed as missing in action.
After investigation he was declared, killed in action.

MILITARY-DEATH: Frederick Peter Powell was in the USN during WWII. He died on
16 Jun 1945 aboard USN Destroyer Twiggs, LS#591 DD, in The Pacific and was
buried at sea. There is a Memorial Marker at the Fort Logan National Military
Cemetery in Littleton, CO
