"John Heithoff was born January 12, 1861, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of Bernhard and Katherine Nieland Heithoff. Here he was baptized John August at St. Mary's Catholic Church. In the year 1871 he came with his parents settling in Roselle Township, Carroll County, Iowa. The eldest of five boys, he helped to break sod and build a homestead. His formal education is not known. As soon as permitted, John somehow struck out for Nebraska. It is recorded in the Antelope County recorder office in Neligh, Nebraska, a contract of sale was made May 30, 1885, to John Heithoff of Petersburg in Boone County. John would have been 24 years old. On January 20, 1886, John married Caroline Schoeppner, daughter of John and Regina Walz Schoeppner, at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton, by Reverend Schulte. They moved to Nebraska, settling near Raeville, in Cedar Township, Antelope County. A deed #15024 recorded John Heithoff purchased 160 acres in Section 31, in Cedar Township, for the sum of $2240, signed July 3, 1891.
Here the following children were born: Bernard, Joseph, Catherine, Clara and Mayme. St. Boniface Church in Raeville records baptism. In about the year 1893, according to tradition, the family came across Nebraska in a covered wagon back to Iowa. They located near Templeton, in Eden Township, Carroll County. They made their home site 2 miles east and 3/4 miles north of Templeton, where John purchased more land. Here two other children were born, Theresa and Edward. In 1906 Platt map shows John Heithoff owned three fourths of section 10 in Eden Township. When John's son Joseph married and took over the home site, John and Caroline Heithoff retired to their home in Templeton. Carolina died in 1935. The next 10 years John lived with his daughter, Clara Schreck in Templeton. He then moved to Elgin, Nebraska in 1945, where he died April 22, 1948, in the home of his daughter Kate (Mrs. Sam Smith) with whom he lived. Funeral mass and burial were held at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. His nephew, Reverend Lawrence Schoeppner of Lidderdale, Reverend Francis Schultes and Reverend Leo Lenz officiated at the services."
